Outdoor play equipment suitable to each childs age and development was inadequate for the number of children in care. CCF Handbook, Section 3.12 A (Section 2.1 Health and Safety, Page 3) Sanitation and Equipment [SR] Comments: At the time of inspection, the Licensing specialist observed children on the playground of 3 different classes ranging from one year old children to age 10 years old in the afternoon. The specialist advised that there was not an adequate amount of play equipment as well as different outdoor activities appropriate for each age range. The specialist advised that the two way seesaw was broken. As well as the slide needed to be replaced and climbing stairs were removed from the wooden equipment until the slide is repaired. The specialist observed one small basketball and a hoop. All of the children wanted the ball which created incidents with the children. Specialist observed children sitting around the playground, playing with mulch, throwing and climbing the two small plastic orange chairs and children complaining of others not sharing. While on the playground the specialist observed 3 incidents. The first incident a younger and older child were fighting punching and pushing/scratching in the face. The second incident a preschool ages girl was observed yanking another girls hair. The third incident a child wanted to swing in one of the two swings and was observed sitting in the swing area throwing mulch at the other children on swings blocking the area. The specialist and provider discussed encouraging staff to organize group activities like red light, green light, duck, duck, goose, the parachute game with rainbow colored tarp, etc. The provider advised that the children had more balls to play with but, they threw them over the fence in the morning. The specialist asked the provider to grab the balls and return them to the playground. The provider brought out about 4-5 more small balls to the playground at time of inspection. The specialist advised that having most of the classrooms in the facility outdoors all at the same time may cause heightened incidents, supervision challenges and limited access to outdoor activities. The provider responded that they combine outside so that a staff member can clean the classrooms. The specialist ultimately suggested that the provider add more outdoor activities to include jump ropes, balls, cars/trucks, hulla hoops, chalk, bikes, soccer goals, etc. TA was provided to ensure that the provider adds more outdoor activities to ensure an adequate number of activities available as well as to ensure it is suitable for each age group by the due date.
