DaycareAlert puts official daycare inspection records — scattered across dozens of government websites — in one free, searchable place. Here's everything a journalist needs to evaluate and use it.

What DaycareAlert is

DaycareAlert.com is a free consumer site that lets parents look up any licensed daycare's official inspection and violation history, alongside a safety rating computed from that record with one published formula applied identically to every facility. It was founded by Brian Doherty, a Texas dad, after an incident at his own son's daycare in North Dallas — the records existed, but they were buried on a state website and nearly impossible for a parent to use. The site is family-run, based in Texas, and independent: ratings are never for sale, and no facility can pay to change one. The full story is on the About page.

Every record originates from an official government licensing agency — the full source list is public, so anything on the site can be verified against the state's own file. Two things are ours, and labeled as such: cost estimates (a model, not quotes) and ratings (computed from the official record, methodology published at how ratings work).
