20. Crib Requirements CCF Handbook, Section 3.6 (20-08)
A sleep sack used did not fit according to manufacturers recommendations, restricted the infants arms, or slid up around the infants face. CCF Handbook, Section 3.6.4, B Physical Environment [SR] Comments: Per DCF Handbook When napping or sleeping, young infants who are not able to roll over must be positioned on their backs and on a firm surface to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, unless an alternate position is authorized by a physician. Sleep sacks that fit according to manufacturers recommendations, do not restrict the infants arms, and will not slide up around the infants face may be used for the comfort of the sleeping infant; however, swaddling shall not be used unless authorized in writing by the childs physician. Written documentation of a physicians authorization must be on file at the facility. Documentation must include the childs name, childs date of birth, description of sleep position required, instructions for the use of any equipment needed, and length of time authorization is valid. The infant room had two children in sleep sacks that restricted their arms. The sleep sacks were sent home, and parents were notified of the sack requirements.
