During a complaint investigation it was confirmed that a child was on the playground eating without an educator directly supervising; licensing rules state that an adult must be within director sight and sound the child while they are eating. — Visit: Complaint Investigation,Technical Assistance — Action taken: LC and Director discussed that any child who is eating needs to have an adult within direct sight and sound of them until the food is finished or disposed of. The center does ask that parents not bring in outside food, but they still tend to do so. Director stated that she will send another reminder out to parents asking them not to bring outside food in, or that they stay with the child at the center until the child is finished eating; educators may not be able to stop what they are doing to supervise the child while they eat at that time.

During a complaint investigation it was confirmed that the maximum capacity of children for the age grouping were on the playground at one time, resulting in potential safety hazards and risks. — Visit: Complaint Investigation,Technical Assistance — Action taken: Director understands that too many children on the playground can lead to unseen safety risks, injuries, disagreements, etc. She will discuss with her staff only going out at their designated playground time to ensure all children can be appropriately supervised.

During a complaint investigation it was determined that there were 50-52 children on the playground at one time, resulting in supervision and safety issues. — Visit: Complaint Investigation,Technical Assistance — Action taken: Each classroom does have specified outside times to keep them in ratio and prevent too many children on the playground at once. Director is going to talk to her staff about the importance of only going out at their designated times. Director is also going to discuss with staff that the answer to being out of ratio is not to combine classes, but rather to request additional staff in the classroom.

During staff interviews conducted for a complaint investigation it was determined that adult:child ratios were exceeded causing classrooms to be out of ratio. One educator had too many children causing her to go over her ratio for one teacher. On the playground teachers were going in and out of the building causing classrooms to not meet adult:child ratio requirements. — Visit: Complaint Investigation,Technical Assistance — Action taken: LC and Director discussed the importance of classrooms remaining in ratio at all times. Director stated that they had extra staff in the facility that could have gone out to the playground to assist, but the front office was not made aware of ratio concerns. Director is going to speak with all staff about requesting assistance immediately when it is needed. She is also going to implement the use of walkie talkies to make it easier for staff on the playground to contact the front office.
