Strategies may include redirection, offering choices, separation from the problem situation (appropriately supervised), discussing feelings, praising positive behavior, and gentle physical guidance such as holding to prevent harm. Gentle physical guidance must always include clear notice and explanation to the child before and during the action. Respect and Safety Children should not be subjected to physical harm, fear, or humiliation. Authority to discipline may not be delegated to other children. Separation When used, separation must be brief, developmentally appropriate, and within a safe, lighted, well-ventilated space under sight or hearing supervision. Isolation in a locked room or closet is prohibited. Developmentally Appropriate Practice Behavior guidance must match the child's age, ability, and individual needs.
